Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok is incorporated under the State Legislative Act (Act IX of 1995) of the Government of Sikkim. It is recognised by UGC under section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956.
/ Current Recognition Status
Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok is recognised by UGC to continue offering programmes through Open & Distance Learning (ODL) mode for the session 2017-2018 vide F. No. UGC/DEB-II/SMU/Recog./2015 Vol. V of the University Grants Commission dated 21/03/2017.

SMU Act
Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995, and is a unique joint venture of the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Group. The University offers distance education programs as part of its effort to bring education to the masses, and fulfil the growing demand for technical and management professionals.

Member Of ICDE
Sikkim Manipal University is a member of the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), which is the leading global membership organization for open, distance, flexible and online education, including e-learning. ICDE has consultative partner status with UNESCO and shares UNESCO’s key value – the universal right to education for all. The Council further derives its position from the unique knowledge and experience of its members throughout the world in the development and use of new methodologies and emerging technologies. ICDE is actively engaged in helping to set the Education 2030 agenda - ‘Towards inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all’.

Sikkim Manipal University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
With the view to promote University activities, through sharing information and co-operation in the field of education, culture, sports and allied areas, the Inter-University Board (IUB) of India acquired a legal status with its registration in 1967 as a Society under the Societies Registration Act as The Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
